The
Power of Perception: A Business Parable The
Belmont Technology Company is facing two major challenges. It is losing market
share and is searching for a new CEO. The Board of Directors has been interviewing
candidates from outside the firm and has not selected anyone to date. Belmont's
David Miller, senior vice president of sales for ten years and John Jones,
senior vice president of marketing for ten years both want the job.
Jones feels the chances are slim that the Board would pick someone from within
the company. If he tries and does not succeed he could be looking for a new
position. He decides not to toss his hat in the ring. Miller has been developing
a sales and marketing strategy based on studying their competition's sales
and retail operations. He has found a way to capitalize on Belmont's strengths
to regain and even surpass prior market share. Miller contacts the Chairperson
of the Board and says he has a strategy that will put the company on track
and will implement it as the next CEO of Belmont. The Board agrees to meet
with him. Analysis: Two
people with similar backgrounds, level of experience and capabilities want
the same job. One person doesn't think it is possible and the other does. The
actions each one takes are based on how they perceive and interpret the circumstances
and their own internal dialogues. Moral: If
you think it can be done, you can do it! If you think it can't be done, you
will never do it! The
